These were held at Adwick Sport Centre. The standard on the day was excellent. The Juniors who took part showed tremendous skill in both Kata and Kumite, and the competition was conducted with a superb sporting attitude.

The youngsters who took part showed all the qualities associated with Karate, from Spirit to commitment and respect.

It was pleasering see the improvement that many had made since this event last year, and hopefully this will continue in the future.

The BWKU would like to thank all who contributed to the successful staging of this event, that is, competitors, parents and spectators, referees and officials, medics and timekeepers and scorers.

The event this year was a huge success. The standard set in both kata and kumite was probably the highest we have seen. The spirit shown by the competitors and the spectators made for very enjoyable day.

'Chris Foreman' AWARD FOR SPIRIT - A.BURKISHAW

'Peter Magarity' STUDENT OF THE YEAR - MARTIN WHITEHAED

'Mathew Davies' ACHIEVMENT AWARD  - CHARLOTTE HUNT

Martin Whitehaed, Student of the Year 2007.

This event was staged at Sheffield.

The following people won medals

Chloe Dannatt, Silver and Tracey Tuplin, Bronze. Both students are coached by Phil Moody at Sukoshi Ryu in Rotherham. Congratulations to you both.

On this note, Charlotte Hunt should also have collected a bronze medal. Charlotte was fighting for 3rd place. Her opponent was a bigger than her and had an England badge on.

Charlotte was losing 4-2 when she kicked Mawashigeri jodan. The referee awarded 3 points. She now led 5-4. Approximately 20 seconds passed when she was hit in the mouth. The Referee awarded the other girl a 1 point penalty. Charlotte now led 6-4 with 4 seconds to go.

Before the fight re-started, the area controller approached the Referee and after a discussion took the kick off Charlotte. Apparently the Referee did not have support from any judges to award the kick.

In the heated debate that followed the Referee and the controller admitted the kick scored and the better fighter had lost.

Thanks to Phil Moody for coaching on the day, and to all who turned out to supprot the BWKU fighters !!

?????????????????????????????????

Josh Heath won a Gold medal for the second running.

The other reepresentatives from the BKWU fought exceptionally well, and deserved to get more medals.

The Mens team was very unlucky to loose to the KUGB A team by a very narrow margin. It has to be said there were some very 'strange' decisions from the officials. Given that only one member of the Mens team was over 21, the future looks bright.

Thanks to all who supported us on the day, and to Paul Jalam, Phil Moody and Mick Clarke for their coaching on the day.

At the British championships, held in Sheffield on Saturday 8th October, Josh Heath, pictured left won a bronze medal. Josh trains at our Kishin Doncaster dojo.

Chris Tully who trains at Kishin Barnsley also took a bronze medal. Photo coming soon.

Well done to both of them.

Overall we had a good day at the English Championships.

Pictuired is Lee Bartholomew having just completed a Gykuazuki. Lee made a welcome return to competition after a long spell out with injury. Lee was in the Mens team who lost in the last 8. This was a particularly good result as one person let us down and did not turn up, meaning we had to fight with 4 men.

As can be seen on the News Page, Naomi Clarke won her first Senior trophy.

Pictured is Chris Tully against England International Milo Hodge. Chris put in a superb performance to take a bronze in the Senior u65kgs. he also took a bronze in the Junior u65kgs.

We were very pleased with Joe Egan who took his first English Championship medal. Joe took a silver in the Cadet under 65kgs. In the last 12 months Joe has made a huge improvement and he deserved his medal. Josh Heath also put in a good performance to take a bronze medal.

The results of our represenatitives are as follows.

BOYS TEAM, 3rd

GIRLS TEAM, 2nd

WOMENS TEAM, 2nd,

JOSH HEATH, 3rd CADETS U75

CATHERINE SMITH. 2nd, CADET FEMALE

CHRIS TULLY, 3rd SENIOR U65, and 2nd SENIOR OPEN.

Well done to you all, and thanks to all who entered on our behalf.

These were held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Saturday 23rd October. Due to a number of circumstances we only had Chris Tully entered in the event. Chris took a silver medal, and produced an excellent performance. Well done to Chris.

These were held at Ponds Forge, over the weekend of 25th and 26th September.

BWKU members took the following medals.

Female Kata - Catherine Smith, Silver

Girls Kumite, 11/12 yeras - Charlotte Hunt, Silver

Girls Kumite, 14/15 years, Under 60kgs - Catherine Smith, Gold

Girls Kumite, 14/15 years, Under 60kgs - Naomi Clark, Silver

Girls Kumite, 14/15 years, plus 60kgs - Racheal Scott, Bronze

Girls Team. Silver

This event was held in Belgrade, which is in Serbia Montenegro. Chris fought on Saturday 10th July.

Chris beat the Czech Republic Champion in the first round by a score of 6 - 3. In then lost to the eventual winner who was the German champion, (who incidentally had been to this competttion 3 times before).

Chris had a chance in the repergarge, and lost the fight for 3rd place. The feedback we have so far is that Chris was unlucky.

As he and his opponent came together, no obvious technique was seen and the referee called yame. At this point his opponents nose was bleeding heavily and Chris was disqualified.

However, the Great Britain coach Ticky Donovan was impressed with Chris's performance, and predicts him to go further in the future.

This event was held on 27th June, at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Two BWKU students won medals at this event. Josh Heath who trains at Kishin Academy in Doncaster won a bronze medal at under 65 kgs, and Charlotte Garside from Solihul also won a bronze in the girls kumite event.

The English Karate Governing Body held the annual Senior Championships in Sheffield on Sunday 21st March.

Pictured, are on the left Josh Heath. Josh took 1st place in the Under 18 years, Under 65 kgs. On the right is Chris Tully. Chris also became English Champion, this time at Under 21 Years and Under 65 kgs.

Also worthy of a mention is Joe Egan from Kishin Academy Barnsley. Joe has recently turned 16 and joined the senior category. Joe got to the last 8 at the English, and although he was disappointed not to go further, he improved on his performance at the AMA held in Nottingham, and his time will come.

28th MARCH, DARWEN

Everyone we entered for this event came away with a trophy. The individual results were as follows.

In the Under 18s's, Josh Heath from Kishin Doncaster beat team mate Joe Egan from Kishin Barnsley in the final. It was very close eventually being decided on ensho sen.

Laura Garside, (far right) and sister Charlotte, (far left) took 2nd place in their respective categories. Martion Pickup (centre) took a 3rd place in the Mens Open. Also pictured are Josh Heath and Joe Egan. Josh, Joe and Martin took 3rd place in the Mens Team.

Sean Milnthorpe who trains with Kishin Barnsley took a 2nd place in the Boys Under 14 years.
